WORLD CUP 2011 - HIGHLIGHTS - ALL SET FOR THE BIG STAGE!

LOW SCORER! - A highly anticipated clash between the two big forces of cricket turned out to be astoundingly low scoring as the Englishmen were bowled out for 171. The Proteas must have been hoping for a cakewalk in the dressing room but the Englishmen had different ideas! Bowling out the Proteas for just 165 meant England won by 6 runs and managed to keep themselves alive in the tournament. Imran Tahir emerged to be the surprise package as he cleaned the English tail cheaply and claimed 4 wickets for just 38 runs.


UNLIKELY BUT TRUE! - Most cricket fans would have expected the Pakistanis to give a real hard time to the Kiwis in the 24th clash of the tournament, especially considering the conditions in which the match was being played. But Pakistan, known for its inconsistent performances, was at its illusionist best as Kiwis won the match comprehensively by a huge margin of 110 runs in what turned out to be a completely one sided affair. Ross Taylor was the main protagonist who engineered this thrashing as he played an amazing and incredible knock of 131 in just 124 deliveries, studded with 8 boundaries and 7 sixes to push NZ beyond 300 and bat Pakistan out of the game.


THE SLEEPING LION! - Perhaps the weakest team in the tournament, Netherlands would have hardly expected to give Indians some jitters down their spine! But that's what happened in their fixture as India once again decided to just step over the line instead of racing towards it. Whether it was a plan to keep themselves subdued in the initial phases of the tournament to shed off the limelight or were the Indians actually struggling to make an impact is anybody's guess. Having bowled out Netherlands for a meager 189, India struggled to cross the target loosing 5 wickets in the process.The only positive sign for them was that it was Yuvraj Singh who spent some valuable time in the middle and saw them through.


CHECKMATE AT START! - In a complete reversal to the India-Netherlands game, Sri Lanka crushed Zimbabweans as they romped home with a 139 runs victory. Openers Tharanga and Dishan were involved in a mammoth opening partnership of 282 runs as they made short work of the Zimbabwean bowling attack, imposing a century each. Even though the Zimbabwean openers lead the fightback with a century opening stand, it was scripted to be Dilshan's day as he bagged incredulous bowling figures of - 3-1-4-4 !


POLLARD ANNOUNCES HIMSELF! - One of the better matches of tournament's league stages saw Pollard discovering his best. In a stunning, dazzling and devastating batting performance, he brushed off Ireland by scoring a 55 ball 94, hitting five sparkling sixes. Another positive for the Windies was that Devon Smith found some form as he paved his way to a sensible century. Ed Joyce and GC Wilson lead the Irish reply and kept their team in the hunt before the lower order crumbled and the Windies won by 44 runs.


BUNNY OF THE LESSER KNOWN! - In an unexpected turnaround of events in the 28th league match of the tournament, England lost to Bangladesh in what came to be their second loss to the so called minnows! After the shameful defeat against Ireland, England pounced back to defeat South Africa in a low scoring match only to follow it up by a "minnowic" performance against the co-hosts. Having lost their batting talisman, Kevin Peterson to an injury before the match, England failed to defend 225 (a low total by their standards) as Bangladesh hauled the target in 49 overs.


29 FOR 9!! -  In a pathetic and grim batting display, after having lost 7 wickets for just 33 runs against England, India lost their last 9 wickets for a meager 29 runs against the Proteas. In a complete failure to capitalize on the solid platform laid down by the master and the Delhi-ites (Sehwag and Gambhir), the Indian middle and lower order ran through the motions to the utter bewilderment of the fans as India once again failed to play 50 overs and were restricted under 300 by the all fired up Dale Steyn.

Much was to follow as Dhoni had already decided to keep things interesting by selecting three seamers and a spinner instead of two each.Illogical bowling changes along with some nonsensical thinking on the part of the captain meant South Africans were always in the hunt. The brave efforts of Zaheer Khan, the go-to-man, and Harbhajan Singh were dusted by the Proteas spin pair of Botha and Peterson as they saw their team through by scoring at more than ten an over in the last three.

The only consolidation for the Indian fans was the masterful and artistic batting display by their beloved maestro, who cracked his 99th international century!

THE SAVIOR! - Avoiding another upset in the Group B, JP Duminy rescued the Proteas with a brilliantly crafted innings of 99. Duminy pulled his team out of the shambles after the Proteas were in a real soup at 117 for 5 at one stage. In a delightful lesson of how to anchor an innings, Duminy took Proteas to a respectful 272 while falling one short of his hundred. The bowlers, led by Morne Morkel ensured no further hiccups as South Africa cruised to a 131 runs victory.



OPENERS SHINE! - In what would come as a relief for their fans, the Aussie openers finally found some form as they made short work of the Canadian total of 212. The duo of Watson and Haddin, who came under severe scrutiny for their ultra slow start against Zimbabwe in the earlier league match,stringed together a 182 run partnership to bat Canada out of the game. The very fact the a team like Canada was able to bat out nearly 46 overs and cross the 200 run mark would have pricked R.Ponting right in his heart. Australia also have a lot to worry in the batting department as Ponting hardly seems to be a batsman these days!


OUT WITH A BANG! - Whatever the result of the tournament, the team that has impressed the maximum with its vast strides in improving the quality of cricket is none other then the "associate" nation, Ireland. The very belief that they could pull off a surprise and perform, the passion they reserve for the game, the commitment and sense of enjoyment in the field and the very attitude towards the game is what has come to define these free spirits on the cricket field.

Chasing a highly competitive 306 posted by Netherlands, Ireland overhauled the target in a "Stirling" performance! The very desire to perform and win in such a manner even though knowing that the result of this battle is not going to have an effect on the outcome of the war is quite appreciable.Ireland bow out of the tournament in style with every true cricket fan bowing to them.


RJ PETERSON - This cricketer from South Africa has been a revelation, both with the bat and the ball. Few would have expected Peterson to make such an impact as he has done in this tournament. Scoring quickly lower down the order and following it up with useful spells of miserly bowling along with grabbing wickets has meant that he has turned out to be an integral part of his team and one of the best bowlers in the tournament with 14 wickets in his kitty. In his last league match of the tournament, Peterson scored a quickfire 22 off 9 balls before blowing away the co-hosts Bangladesh by returning with figures of - 7-3-12-4 handing his team a huge and dominating 206 runs victory.


UV IS BACK AND THE TREND CONTINUES! - Three half centuries and a century in six matches. Add to it the 9 wickets in match winning bowling performances. Yuvraj Singh has certainly proved his worth in the Indian side. Whether he is subdued because of the criticism or has he actually started to curb his instincts and play according to situation and team demands is anybody's guess but no one can take from him the vital role he has played in deciding India's fortunes in this tournament so far.

Whereas the other Indian batsman continued their shoddy and inconsistent performance, Yuvraj came up with an uncharacteristically well crafted and a mature innings of 113 off 123 balls that saw India post a competitive total of 268 on the board.As if he just needed a shake to set things in order, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was at his captaincy best after his unimaginable outing in the previous match. Coupled with the amazing and never ending efforts of Zaheer Khan, the go-to-man for the Indians as far as the bowling is concerned, India managed to skittle out West Indies for 188 and clinch victory in their last league match.

However, th co-host have a lot to worry about a new trend they seem to be developing! 33 for 7, 29 for 9 and now 51 for 7! These are the batting performances of the Indian team after a solid platform was laid down by the top order.If the Indian team has to live up to the dream of a billion people, they have to apply themselves and execute their plans in a far better way as now, there is no way other than winning as the tournament enters the knockout stage.

WORLD CUP 2011 - HIGHLIGHTS - TOO GOOD ALREADY!

World Cup is almost half way through the league stages and cricket world has already been treated to some amazing and memorable play! Here are some of the highlights, the highs and lows of this World Cup so far.One wishes the tournament performance charts extrapolate and that the fans are left spell bound by some more memorable moments :-


THE MARAUDER - First century of the tournament came off the flashing blade of Virender Sehwag as Bangladeshies were left ball watching! A fabulous mix of unbelievably subtle aggression and pleasing application saw Sehwag creating an epic as he smacked 175 off 140 deliveries flecked with 14 boundaries and 5 sixes.Once he got India off to a flier, he settled down with Kohli, dealing in singles in the middle of the innings.There was no stopping him once India took the batting powerplay and even as he fought cramps, he batted Bangladesh out of the game.


 
TWO TEN WICKET WINS! - The black caps completely dogged the fixtures against the minnows, Kenya and Zimbabwe, as they handsomely chased the meagre totals of 70 and 163 respectively. Cricket is a funny game and even though one expects the team batting second to win such games comfortably, its not always with such ease that the toal is overhauled. Yet, with NZ, one can never be sure of such a performance and they shall do well to continue this good work against better oppositions instead of playing against them like minnows themselves.




UNNATURAL! - 29 off 66 balls! By any means, this is an exceedingly slow start for a batsman in one day cricket, especially if the batsman is an Australian. Add to that the weak opposition in Zimbabwe that Australia faced, many eye brows were raised on this extra sedate start from Brad Haddin.Though ICC anti corruption unit is looking into the matter, from the cricketing point of view, such a start hardly made any logic. Given the fact that the tournament is being held in the sub continent, where runs can be as easy to find as sipping through a cup of coffee, this slow start appeared to be nonsensical.



RN TEN DOESCHATE - Not many cricket fans would have known this Dutch player before he struck a welcome century against England. Even as his teammates spooned catches, many of which were spilled by the buttery hands of Englishmen, Doeschate made a name for himself with a chanceless and impressive 119 0ff 110, smacking 9 fours and 3 sixes.

A look at these bowling figures is bound to leave most cricket fans bewitched. Considering the fact that the last two of them came in tight situations, handing his team the victory, the significances of these achievements is increased manifold. Shahid Afridi, the Pakistan captain for the World Cup, has already contributed much to the consistent run of his team so far in the tournament. Known to hit the ball a mile when on song, a win by 11 runs against Sri Lanka and an embarassment saving victory against Canada by 46 runs were largely a result of Afridi's exploits with the ball.


 
THE MAESTRO, THE LONER AND A TIE! - Grace, elegance, subtlety, commitment and application personified! In one word, a masterful batting display by Sachin Tendulkar saw India post a commanding total of 338 against England.A brilliant mix of aggression and the longing to stay till the end is what has come to characterize the legend off late and he paved his way to his first century of this tournament as he scored 120 off 115 balls, thwacking 10 fours and 5 sixes.

The game was far from over as Andrew Strauss and the Indian bowlers decided to give the fans their money's worth! Even though others fell around him (except Ian Bell), Andrew Strauss engineered a lone battle, proving to be the only and the most prickly thorn in India's quest of a second victory in as many matches. A well grafted and a mammoth 158 off 145 deliveries, sparkled with 18 fours and a six meant England were always in the hunt and infact, were voyaging comfortably before a marvelous bowling burst from Zaheer.

A fantastic chase against the home side in alien conditions would certainly have boosted the morale of every Englishmen.The match ended in a tie even though England would consider themselves the psychological winners.



A DOUBLE BOMBARDMENT! - Not many hit the ball as effortlessly and cleanly as this Giant from West Indies does! In almost a reversal show to that of Brad Haddin's against Zimbabwe, Keiron Pollard decided to bombard Netherlands as he breezed his way to 60 off just 27 deliveries in a stunning display of merciless batting. Off late, West Indies has put up a miserable show in all the forms of cricket. But thanks to players like Pollard and Gayle, the legacy of the 1980's is atleast breathing if not rocking the cricket world!

Later, Kemar Roach decided to come into his own as he captured the first hat-trick of the tournament, increasing the misery of the Dustch manifold. 8.3-0-27-6 were the bowling figures Roach ended with after his annihilation of the Netherlands.



FAST BOWLERS CUP?? - In a complete turnaround of what everyone expected of the tournament played in the subcontinent, Lasith Malinga grabbed the second hat-trick the very next day after Kemar Roach's exploits in a ravishing and dazzling display of fast bowling. Producing yorkers at will, Malinga destroyed the Kenyan batting, ending up with figures reading 7.4-0-38-6! After Zaheer almost won the game for India against England and Roach teared through the Dutsch batting line up, this performance from Malinga would have lead everyone into believing this to be Bowlers Cup!



PURE MAGIC! - In what shall be remembered as one of the greatest matches in the world cup history ever, Ireland beat England much to the rejoice of the cricket world adding some flair and interest to the initial stages of the tournament. In a completely unbelievable turnaround, Ireland scaled up the huge total put up by England to create history by chasing down the highest ever total in World Cup history.

KJ O'Brien was the soul of this chase as he hit a thoroughly sensational, scintillating and captivating century, the fastest of the World cup history, to give his team a dream victory.Even as the lower order rallied, almost nervelessly, around the big man, Brien smacked the Enlgish bowlers all around the park in an excellent show of  his range of shots.113 off 63 balls, studded with 13 fours and 6 sixes meant that Irish team won even though being 5 down for 111 at one stage, chasing a mamoth 328.One hopes that teams like Ireland continue to entertain and perform in a similar manner in future as well. They might well have set an example and opened the lock on the door to the recognition of the hidden talents for other teams considered minnows as well.50 over cricket was provided a new life!



POWERPLAY! - Netherlands were once again at the recieving end as South Africa cruised to a massive victory in their limited overs fixture. JP Duminy found his best as he blasted a 15 ball 40 studded with 2 fours and 4 sixes propelling the Proteas score to just over 350, giving them that added advantage of 20-30 runs (as if they needed any!)



OUT OF ORDER! - Co-hosts Bangladesh surprised one and all with their dismal all round play against the West Indies in th 19th match of the tournament.West Indies cake walked through the Bangladeshi batting lineup as the latter were bundled out for a meagre 58, a target West Indies overhauled without much fuss.
Such was the effect of this saddening show that the discipline barriers of the Bangladeshi fans were breached and enraged, they stones the team buses of both the teams and also threw placards and their own players.

WORLD CUP 2011 - LAST WORLD CUP???

Though homo sapiens cannot predict the future, following are some of the players who have been at the heart of cricket world, have amazed and enchanted us with their talent and skill, have created their own space in cricket history, have served their countries as national players to the best of their abilities (well, the above applies to most of them! :P) and may be playing their last world cup, all the more reason not to miss this world cup!

SACHIN TENDULKAR - What more can be said of this living legend! What more may i write that has already not been documented! Undoubtedly, the best cricketer to have set his feet on the cricket field ever, Sachin Tendulkar has been a symbol of excellence, passion, dedication, commitment and never say die attitude for over 21 years! His constant desire to keep on learning the art of cricket is amazing and his ever increasing thirst to play for India is unbelievable. Hugely popular in every part of the globe and highly respected among his contemporaries, Sachin has found a very special place in the hearts of millions of cricket fans.

No cricketer has ever brought so much to the game as the Maestro. To name a few, the paddle sweep, the upper cut to fast bowlers like Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson, the glorious and spell bounding extra cover drives, teaching Harbhajan "the doosra", teaching Sreesanth how to control swing and teaching Yuvraj how to play Mendis! This might be his last world cup. Cricket shall never be the same and no ball shall ever be played in the same manner. A reason good enough to follow this world cup.


JACQUES KALLIS - The best all rounder in the modern era, Kallis has seen it all in his long and amazing career. Few bring to the cricket field the grace, elegance and calm that he does. A team man to the core, Kallis has always put team ahead of personal goals and thats the only way he knows to play cricket.Great hands in slips, a rock solid technique backed up by the ability to smash the bowlers all around the park and the ability to provide crucial breakthroughs with the ball by pace, swing and bounce make him an invaluable asset to the team. At 35, he would surely be trying to win the tournament for South Africa as this world cup might be his last and he might as well be the last cricketer in the classical mould!


SHIVNARINE CHANDERPAUL - An unsual but original stance at the crease is what has come to represent this little cricketer off late, overshadowing many of the priceless qualities, envy of every budding cricketer. Playing his fifth and probably the last world cup, Shivnarine Chanderpaul has an unending supply of concentration and is impervious to distractions. In the times when the West Indian cricket has hit an all time low, he is one man who takes pride in representing his country, a thing he does with ample grace and discipline.When it comes to batting, few wickets are more highly prized than his.


MARK BOUCHER - Even though he has not been selected to play this world cup, this article shall be incomplete without mentioning about this machine! Nerves of steel and an uncanny ability to perform under pressure situations with the bat is what distinguished this wicketkeeper from his contemporaries. Unlike the dashing strokeplay of Adam Gilchrist or the raw power of Dhoni, Boucher's batting was characterized by patience and an ability to rally the troops even in the worst of situations. The responsibility to finsih the innings with a flair or to provide the finishing touches to a huge chase resided with him, a duty he fulfilled to the best of his abilities.


BRETT LEE - Pace, charisma and athleticism are few of the characteristics that define this genuine fast bowler from Australia. Hugely popular in India, Brett Lee has given nightmares to the best of batsmen of his era. A will to constantly improve resulted in bowling consistent lines and lengths at neck-break speeds! Rarely have fast bowlers been able to wean the long handle when required; Brett Lee brings a lot to the lower order and has rescued his team more often than not. Back in the Australian side after suffering from a few injuries as well as being ignored by the selectors and his captain, Brett Lee is a treat to watch.


ZAHEER KHAN - A left arm medium pacer, Zaheer has been the linchpin of India's pace attack for almost a decade. Known for his aggressive bowling in his early days, Zaheer has made a name for himself by mastering the art of swinging the cricket ball both ways. His bowling is as much of an art as it is economical. Shouldering the pace attack for his country almost single handily has resulted in the burden of huge expectations and a recurring bout of injuries. Probably playing his last world cup, Zaheer forms an integral part of the Indian team.


CHRIS GAYLE - No one treats the bowlers with more disdain than this giant from West Indies! One of the hardest hitters of the cricket ball, Chris Gayle spells doom for the opposition when on song.Probably playing his last world cup, he, in his own words, would not like to wait for another four years to win the world cup! If Gayle fires, the world cup shall certainly be lit up by the spectacle of his fireworks!


SCOTT STYRIS - Another of the long list of all rounders from New Zeland, Scott styris is the mainstay of the Kiwis middle order and rallies the bowling attack in the middle overs. He provides stability to the Kiwi line up and add to that his immense experience, he is a valuable asset in their team. At 35, he is probably participating in his last world cup.


RICKY PONTING - Cricket, the Gentleman's game, shall be relieved the day Ponting hangs his boots! A selfish cricketer to the core, Ponting pretends to be oblivious to the strength of the opposition and has always failed to accept defeat gracefully. Three time Ashes loosing captain is a feat never achieved before by an Australian captain! Marked by over optimistic and mostly foolish attitude, Ponting is someone to watch out for if you hate him as much as he might be adding another feather in his cap by loosing the world cup as the captain.



MUTTIAH MURALITHARAN - Controversy and obliviousness are the two words that first strike the mind on thinking about the record holder of the most number of test wickets. Hardly a cricketer who has been a record holder has had such a lack of knowledge about the game or such a fear for the cricket ball as he displays on the field. Shouting at every instance of ball hitting the pad and running as if a bull dog was coming his way when thrown the ball to, Muralitharan is known for spinning the ball at any surface.

A deformed elbow is only a part of the story. Murali has exceptionally supple wrists and a shoulder that rotates as rapidly as a fast bowler's at the time of delivery. A combination of all these factors enables him to turn the ball far more than most orthodox finger-spinners! On a the other side, Murali has displayed great grit and determination in facing all the controversies and not for once does the smile fades from his face, giving him the name of the smiling assasin! Somewhere, somehow, he is certainly able to represent cricket in terms of being a gentleman.


RAY PRICE - The best Zimbabwean spinner since Paul Strang, Ray Price offers a lot to Zimbabwe with his willy left arm spinners. An economical one day bowler, Price is bound to play a major role in Zimbabwe's campaign. Though he may be suffering from partial deafness due to meningitis in his early years, Zimbabwean cricket shall never be dumb when speaking about their prolific cricketer.

WORLD CUP 2011 - INJURED, LEFT OUT OR OPTED OUT!!

AUSTRALIA -

If persisting with Ricky Ponting is the biggest mistake Australians have made, exclusion of a recovering Michael Hussey from the squad comes very close to it.. Hussey, who is suffering from hamstring injury, is expected to be fit for the later stages of the tournament and his absence renders the middle order exposed! Though he should have made it to the original squad along with Michael Hussey, Calum Ferguson has been named as his replacement. Ferguson, a highly talented batsman is apt at anchoring innings and scoring under pressure. Batting him at No.5 (instead of No.7) shall be ideal for the Aussies.

Nathan Hauritz misses out owing to a shoulder injury while the second choice spinner, Xavier Doherty misses out due to back injury which meant Jason Krejza has been called up and shall lead the spin department (Opposition batsmen must be licking their lips! ). Shaun Marsh (hamstring) , Ryan Harris (knee) and Clint McKay (left foot) are other big players missing out owing to injuries, further denting Australia's chances.Peter Siddle also misses the most important ICC event owing to a back injury.James Pattinson and Ricky Ponting have recovered in time from back and finger injuries respectively to represent Australia in the World Cup.


ENGLAND -

The biggest blow to England has to be the finger injury to Eoin Morgan, the linchpin of England's middle-lower order and an excellent finisher. Ravi Bopara, by no means an apt replacement for the former, gets a shot and has been named against him. Matt Prior has been favored to Steve Davies, a very good move by the English selectors as Prior is expected to score quickly in the batsmen friendly sub continental conditions.

A host of players recovering from various injuries have been included in the squad for the World Cup. These include Graeme Swann (knee), Tim Bresnan (calf-strain), Ajmal Shahzad (hamstring) and Paul Collingwood (back spasm). Samit Patel was left out owing to his overweight and lack of dedication towards improving his health and fitness. Chris Tremlett, who has recovered in time from a side strain has been included as a reserve for Stuart Broad, who has managed to recover from an abdominal injury himself!


ZIMBABWE -

Sean Ervine's decision to opt out from the World Cup at the last moment comes as a big blow for Zimbabwe. Ervine, a fine batsman, decided to continue playing for Hampshire where he is well respected and quite popular among the fans. Tino Mawoyo, who had been named as his replacement suffered from a abdominal muscle tear himself and finally, Terry Duffin made it to the squad. The latter's ability to stay at the wicket is undoubted though the challenge for him is to score as quickly as required in one day internationals.


SOUTH AFRICA -

Selectors decision to leave out Albie Morkel from the squad has been influenced far more by the injudicious use of the all rounder by the national coach and captain than his erratic performances at the top level. David Miller and Mark Boucher have also been left out. The exclusion of the latter comes out as a positive and aggressive move from the selectors as they opted for Morne Van Wyk, an exciting opening wicketkeeper-batsman.

Kallis, the world's best all rounder, has been included in the squad despite of his rib injury and is expected to recover in time for the crunch matches.


NEW ZELAND -

The only major team in the tournament that is least affected by injury problems, off late, the Kiwis have been in the news for their uncharacteristic off field behavior.Jacob Oram gets a nod from the selectors despite having an injured ankle. New Zeland is hardly expected to have a major impact on the tournament given even the conditions hardly favor them.


WEST INDIES -

The superpower turned minors, West Indies may spring up a surprise or two as they have match winners in Chris Gayle and Keiron Pollard. The decision to leave out the likes of Brendon Nash, Fidel Edwards and Jerome Taylor is disheartening but not surprising given the current state of West Indian cricket.Denesh Ramdin is another player who has been ignored for the world cup.


INDIA -

Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik and Irfan Pathan are the major names missing from the Indian squad. Given the inconsistent performance of Rohit and Irfan even after being provided with enough opportunities, the selectors decision to do away with them is a positive one. Also, being the host, India can avail the services of Dinesh Karthik at a short notice in case Dhoni is unavailable to play a match.

Indian medium pace department suffered a major blow when Praveen injured his elbow. Sreesanth has been named as his replacement. Horses for courses is the "mantra" that teams have to follow sometimes and Praveen was the best horse as far as the bowling department is concerned! By no means a tear away fast bowler, Praveen has proved himself good enough as a consistent and impact player over the years and his services shall certainly be missed.

The selectors have done exceedingly well by showing Ishant Sharma the door. Pragyan Ojha is another player to miss out on a berth in the squad.


BANGLADESH -

Alok Kapali's exclusion from the squad is the only major surprising decision apart from the decision to leave out an injured Mushrafe Mortaza (knee) from the squad as far as Bangladesh is concerned.


SRI LANKA -

Leaving out Sanath Jayasuriya was an excellent decision by the Sri Lankan selectors. Depending on a player who has diverted his attention to politics and is a member of Parliament is hardly worthwhile. The same cannot be said of the decision to leave out Chaminda Vaas. Brett Lee is the key member of this squad and Australia have raised their chances a notch by bringing him back in the scheme of things. Australia have a chance of making it to the semi finals if Lee fires on all cylinders. Morne Morkel and Dale steyn are sure to keep opposition batsmen sleepless though will they deliver consistently in the sub continental conditions remains to be seen. The weakest link is the lack of a finshing all rounder and the absence of Albie Morkel is bound to deter their chances of winning the conpetition.

ashes gone, abt time for ponting to go... he never was a good captain, just that he was so lucky to have such a consistent flow of such talented players...i think warne would have been the perfect captain to follow steve waugh... if warne can achieve what he achieved with rajasthan royals with a bunch of not so talented players & just by inspiring them, just imagine what he could have done with an aus team with such awesomely talented super players... looking at ponting does not install any confidence... how can he inspire anyone when cant inspire himself... enough of calling ponting as the best captain right now... he is not even the best in australia...

INDIA AND THE NO.1 TEST STATUS

Sometimes, expecting a sunny day ahead, it feels miserable when one reaches the office drenched in rain! Indians ought to be feeling the same way after NZ, by no means a strong test side, surprised many with their performance in the first half of the ongoing tournament. For NZ, though, the situation is as unexpected as a call from your ungrateful boss breaking you the delightful news of a promotion and a salary hike!

In my view, such a unidimensional team has never occupied the No.1 status as a test side in the history of cricket. To start with, India has not been able to produce a genuine all rounder since Kapil Dev. The No.5 batting spot has been a concern ever since Saurav Ganguly hung his boots. Barring Anil Kumble, the only consistent Indian bowler in the past decade and Zaheer and Harbhajan to some extent, India has always been marred by a dearth in the bowling department, resorting to the part timers (mainly spinners) to provide support to them in the absence of an able fourth and fifth bowling option. Neither has India been fortunate enough to enjoy the luxury of having a tear away fast bowler such as a Brett Lee.

India, relying thoroughly on its consistent batting performances, has made its way to the top helped by some uninspiring bowling. Indian bowling performances over the past decade have just been like lightning in an otherwise dark sky! They have been inconsistent to say the least, looking like tigers ready to pounce on their prey on one day and looking utterly helpless and lost on the other. No wonder that the Indians were denied a win in this series as batting collapses were triggered by the Kiwi medium pacers in the ongoing test series. Though in terms of being a complete team, Indian current test side shall always be an arguable No.1 side, Sachin,Dravid and Laxman are great legends and unparalleled jewels of the game and perhaps, the team for which they play deserves the No.1 status. The magical feeling one experiences when watching Dravid and Sachin bat together for India shall certainly be missed in the future. Hence, let us sit back and enjoy what shall be remembered as the golden era of Indian test cricket.

AN UNAPPEALING SERIES

In the times when the image of test cricket is already languishing, a contest between the number one ranked test side with the sliding and disarrayed Kiwis is vastly improbable to generate any interest among the viewers. Its just like pitching Ashish Nehra against Matthew Hayden in a boxing ring! The New Zeland team, which was recently bulldozed and humiliated by the minnows of world cricket (Bangladesh) is hardly anticipated to provide any resistance to the Indian team, which boasts of a virtually invincible batting line up. The likes of Chris Martin, Tim Southee, Jeetan Patel and Andy McKay are highly unlikely to trouble the legends of the game, v.i.z, Dravid,Tendulkar and Laxman.

From an Indian point of view, this series provides a beneficial prospect for someone like Gambhir and Dravid to spend some time in the middle and be back among the runs. It also provides Sreesanth, known more for his over aggressive and uncontrollable behaviour than his bowling these days, with a good opportunity to prove his worth.The disappointing aspect has been the persistence the Indian selectors have shown with Dhoni, who could well have been rested for this series keeping in view the South African tour and the world cup. Also, considering the fact that Dhoni injured his fingers in the last series against Australia, the time was apt to rest him as he is one of those whom India want to see fit and charging with the world cup around.

From the Kiwis point of view, Williamson shall be looking to come good by scoring heavily and justifying the faith of the selectors in him. Its a lovely chance for the Kiwi bowlers to test themselves against the famed Indian line up in trying and slow conditions. For NZ to provide a stiff competition to India, their batsmen have to apply themselves posting huge scores on the board and Jesse Ryder, back from a rehabilitation process, is expected to be the mainstay along with Ross Taylor. Considering the phenomenal plan execution and ample patience that Ryder displayed on his last tour to India, he is one batsman Indians would want to get rid of quickly. In Mc Cullum, they have one of the most devastating batsman when on song and in Daniel Vettori, they have an all rounder who is resilience personified. Indians shall certainly set a big foot wrong if they decide to take the series lightly. Cricket is a funny game and no one knows what the outcome of the series shall be but in this festive season, cricket, for once, has taken a back seat in our cricket crazy nation.

IND VS AUS - THE INDIAN SQUAD

The board took no half measures in making clear their infelt feeling about the pratice game against the Aussies. Announcing the test squad before the practice match is a direct indication to the players looking to make a mark that all their efforts, atleast for the time being, are futile and hardly necessary. Once you get over this shock, a look at the squad furthur confirms your belief of the declining cricketing standards in India. The fact that an out of form and a lacklustre Ishant continues to share the burden of opening the attack along with Zaheer is a testimony of the obvious. Sreesanth, a circius clown more than a cricket player, is the back up bowler!
Instead of criticism of the selction process (The board has made almost all the right calls),the squad further confirms the absence of a genuine all rounder and the dearth Indian cricket is facing in the bowling department.

For a change, the selection doesnt leave anything unfulfilled this time except the absence of a reserve wicket keeper. To be fair to the selectors, they hardly have any option but to select an extra bowler or a batsman which is why the selections appeal to you even more.A back up opener in Murali Vijay, a reserve batsman in Pujara, three spinners and three medium pacers to go along with the captain and wicket keeper Dhoni give a complete and balanced look to the squad.Guys like Badrinath miss out but in this golden era of Indian test cricket which comprises of,perhaps the best test batting line up ever in cricket, it is next to impossible to find a place for everyone.

Once again, cricket shall be played as it is meant to be when Dravid,Tendulkar and Laxman take the field.Watching them play is like eating a delicious ice-cream; you want more and more...and more!Once again, the majestic batting of "The Master", the commitment to the cause of "The Wall" and the almost illusionary effect of things being normal in crises of "The very very special" Laxman shall be on display.As a viewer, let us sit back and enjoy the game of cricket the way of these unparalleled jewels of the game.Perhaps, it is because of the nature and sportsmanship of such legends that cricket is still known as the gentleman's game.

IND VS AUS - THE BOARD PRESIDENT'S ELEVEN SQUAD

Sometimes, i wonder if the selection process in Indian cricket might seem like a game of chess to the players where they are the pieces under the selectors control; you never know when (and why!) are you going to be moved!To the viewer, it certainly seems to be doltish,inconsequential,bizarre, perhaps, foreordained and at the heights of being lackadaisical! There can be no feasible elucidation of the basis on which Jadeja has made it to the squad.The board seems to be juggling between Dinda, Vinay,Yadav,Unadkat,Mithun and Sreesanth with no definative plan in mind.The reality is that Zaheer has been the only "medium" pacer who has found his place consistently in the scheme of things. India have struggled severely when it comes to finding pacemen and more so in harnessing the talents of those found.
Once tipped as the India's best all rounder after Kapil, Irfan seems to be in the limelight for every reason other than cricket these days.Once touted as the next big thing to happen to Indian bowling, Sreesanth has failed to showcase his cricketing talents after his dancing jig in South Africa and has, perhaps, started enjoying the limelight the other way.

It is bemusing, infact, piteous to see selectors happy to go in with just six specialist batsmen!What is more pathetic is their decision to leave Badrinath out who has hardly left any stone unturned to make a statement for selection in the test squad.Jadeja could have easily made way for him.The fact that out of the six batsmen selected, three are regular openers in tests is also incomprehensible.Lack of a genuine all rounder and a reserve wicketkeeper are the two biggest worries for the future if Indian cricket.In no way is Wriddhiman Saha capable of fitting in the big boots of Dhoni if the need be.The biggest positive has been the selection of Cheteshwar Pujara who has been done great injustice in being tried out at the top level so late.Now is his big chance to make a statement with a sterling performance against the Aussies.

Overall, its just saddening to see Indian cricket sink furthur.In the era of IPL and Champions League (Both of which have their advantages as well as disadvantages) where making money is no more a problem,players seem content to be selected for these tournaments rather than push themselves a bit more and come out of their comfort zones in an effort to make a statement for selection in the national team.In such a scenario, one feels that Murali Vijay, once regarded as a technically sound opening test batsman, has done himself and his career no harm by transforming into an aggressive and swashbuckling batsman, being flexible enough to adapt to the changing demands of cricket, still referred to as the gentleman's game.

SRI TRI - SERIES FINAL - IND VS SRI

India were always in danger once they made their "best player", Ravindra Jadeja sit out! On a serious note, finally, some sense prevailed. But many inexplicable facts came to the fore as the game progressed.India opened the bowling with Munaf instead of Nehra, a ppor decision as Nehra gets the new ball to swing.
Still, with Patel looking good, he was handed over a change of ends and Nehra was introduced into the attack.After 5 overs in the spell, Patel was removed though he had beautifully managed to keep the Sri Lankan openers in check.
Ishant started well but as has been the norm, he was thrashed in his very second over owing to the lack of variations in his bowling. Nehra's efforts were disappointing to say the least as he bowled short and wide regularly, though he has carried the bowling responsibilities well throughout the series. Meanwhile, Sri Lankans found themselves in a strong position as the openers took them past the 100 mark in the 16th over. A leading edge resulted in the fall of Jayawardene bringing Tharanga to the crease.Tharanga ended his miserable tour on a sombre note as Sri Lanka lost two wickets in quick succession. Dhoni, once again, did not attack the new batsman, Sangakkara, placing too many fielders at the boundaries which allowed Sri Lankans to keep the scoreboard ticking. Sangakkara and Dilshan batted very sensibly indeed,taking no undue risks off the part time bowlers. Finally, Sangakkara broke free in the 35th over with Sri Lanka in total control, smacking Sehwag over the top.Dilshan reached his hundered in the 37th over, much to his relief as his form hassnt been the best in the series.

It is really bemusing to see Nehra not happy with other guys when they misfield off his bowling! Nehra's fielding is not a secret and it is as bad as ever witnessed in the game of cricket.It was good to see Ishant trying some slower deliveries in his second spell, something he should dish out to the batsmen more often.
Once again, the pull shot proved to be Dilshan's downfall.Accurate short stuff seems to get him into trouble more often than not.Anyways, it was a very fine innings from him,giving Sri Lanka a fantastic launchpad to rocket to a big score.
Yorkers seem to be as alien to Indian bowlers as is functioning to ICC!Dunno what the bowlers work out in the nets, at the domestic levels and what keeps the coaching staff busy to overlook such a big gap.Kapugedera failed yet again and its time Sri Lankans gave the likes of Chandimal a look in.Munaf impressed with his bowling (though not with his attitude) as he removed a rampaging Sangakkara to give India a chance of restricting Sri Lanka to under 285, still a huge score.Yet, Sri Lankans managed to reach 299, a total they should find easy to defend once they made early inroads in the Indian batting line up under the conditions prevailing at Dambulla.

Indian innings started in a similar fashion as they lost Karthik early on, though it was due to umpiring error which once again enforces the need of technology to come into play and is a strong testimony of ICC's management and authority.
Sehwag rocketed off right from the word go, creaming both the Sri Lankan bowlers to boundaries.Malinga caused a few problems to Sehwag in the 5th over and the contest was a treat to watch.Much drama followed the very next over when Sri Lankans missed a run out of Sehwag though found him back in the pavillion on the 6th ball when the batsman was plumb in front,not given out but was roaming out of his crease and as a result,got runout!Yuvraj Singh was extremely lucky to survive on his very first ball due to another umpiring error, this time in India's favor.The predicatble captaincy of Sangakkara was on display again as he gave Malinga just 4 overs (yet again!) in his first spell.Next,Yuvraj again survived as he was caught behind of a dubious no ball from Matthews.After a couple of sparkling glimpses of the dashing and flamboyant Yuvraj of the old, another dubious umpiring decision saw India loose their third wicket.It was a relief to see Dhoni walking in at No.5 when the situation demanded someone who could anchor the innings, something he has not done in this series.It was a brave move from Sangakkara to introduce Perera before giving Kulusekera an 8 over spell (as he mostly does!), the decision taken, perhaps because of Perera's exploits in the previous match!

Just as India crossed the 100 run mark, Dhoni survived an LBW chance which the umpire percieved as an inside-edge.Virat had a rush of blood the very next over and paid big time for his ungainly stroke. He needs to develop a more all round batting (covers and square leg are the two regions he gathers most of his runs from) and look to play a long innings putting a heavy price tag on his wicket.
Raina came in next with India in deep trouble and in deperate need of a partnership.Raina is someone who blindly follows and supports his natural game, no matter what the situation demands.He smacked Perera for a six in the 8th ball of his innings.The duo played aggressively unlike the Sangakkara-Dilshan partnership, finding it difficult to score in singles and twos.Dhoni did settle in though every now and then, the ball found its way to the keeper past his edge.He began running out of partners fast as Rohit's dismal tour continued.He is one guy who has done the least justice with the talent he possesses.Dhoni was alert enough to call for the powerplay as it was a now or never situation.This kind of decisions are what we are more used to seeing from Dhoni.A twist in the tail seemed likely as Kumar got some quick runs before being bowled by a peach of a yorker from Malinga, leaving Dhoni stranded to wage a lone, almost ungainly battle, though considering his stature and reputation, Sri Lankans would have hardly breathed easily.Quite unexpectedly, Randiv was shown undue respect and attacked less often by Dhoni and he seemed to have lost all hope after the 44th over.The injured right hand and a pulled hamstring that he sustained might have a significant part in his sedate approach.The game ended in the 47th over, India handed a huge defeat by Sri Lanka.A meaningless series came to an end with Sri Lankan team emerging victorious.

Kumar Sangakkara deserves a special mention here.I have always considered NZ and Sri Lanka as the two teams who have mantained the spirit of cricket even in the changing times where aggression,sledging and positive attitute have become the buzz words.But the fast degrading attitude of the Sri Lankans does leave you utterly bewildered.Talking purely about the sportsmanship and the on-field behavior, Sri Lanka looked to be a notch above all others under the reign of Ranatunga,Attapatu and Jayawardene.The same cannot be said of now.
Sangakkara certainly leads from the front when it comes to some despicable and unworthy attitude.The way he applauds the bowler when the ball has been delivered miles away to distract the umpire and then the expression of disbelief on the ball being calle a wide is repulsive and disgusting.He pretends of being oblivious to the rules guarding the caught and LBW decisions as his dullard, unwieldy and gawky appeals suggest.Under his leadership, Dilshan,Randiv and Welegedera seem to be doing overtly fine in this department!Far from being the side always respected for their sportsmanship,Sri Lanka is waging a deplorable war desperately trying to catch up with the Pakistanis.It is hardly surprising when such behavior is witnessed as it appears quite a trivial matter in comparison to the complete lack of control and authority of ICC over world cricket.


The bee of overweening advertisements that had stung the IPL severely has now found its way into the international arena as well.Royal stag and Mc.Dowells advertisements were seen throughout the series during the match.Just as ICC has failed to enforce the review system and is just acting like a puppet,it has also failed to stop and control the unwarranted and unnecessary intervention of commercial world as a result, facing the petulance of dissatisfied viewer (Substantial crowds were hardly seen during the current competition).One would certainly like to,once again, witness pure,competitive,engrossing,entertaining and fair cricket.

SRI TRI - SERIES - IND VS NZ

India made it to the final of this meaningless and "could be avoided" tri-series after NZ batting crumbled without much fight, rather surprisingly.The indication from the Indian camp is certainly clear! The players and the team management are hardly looking at this series as a significant one, continuing with their illogical selections even in a crunch game such as this.The fact that four of the senior players are already resting should have meant India tested their bench strength as much as possible.Instead, MS Dhoni decided to stick with his favourite player, Jadeja just as he continued to keep wickets despite of injured fingers.He won the toss which was followed by a formality of asking him what he wanted to do!Virat Kohli was given a chance instead of Rohit while Tiwary the "waterboy" continued to be on the sidelines.How often does one get to see a four "medium" pace pronged attack from India!Munaf, a player who is a shame on the field when you consider that players out there represent their country, got a look in instead of Ojha.
Anyways, Mills provided the perfect start to the Kiwis by claiming the wicket of Karthik whose role seems to be to inspect the field and return back with vital information about the demons in the pitch for other batsmen!Just as Sehwag looked to be settling in after a not so swashbuckling start, Kohli edged a delivery away from his body ,as he normally does, stood his crease as if to say "hey!that was miles away!!" and left slowly for the pavilion.The snickometer showed a nick and hence, his dissent and the umpire's decision might lead him into some problem.Mills bowled short of a length to Sehwag outside off,thus, asking to be hit and Sehwag obliged by smashing him to all parts of the ground, including a one legged whip through mid wicket!


Yuvraj did not look himself at all as he started sedately and soon was trying uncharacteristic shots eventually gifting his wicket to McKay.Once again, India were in trouble and this being the crunch game for both the teams, Dhoni would have done well to come in.
But ,once again, as has been the norm through out the series, Raina was sent in.For the first time in the series, some short stuff was dished out to Raina, though that seemed to be the Kiwi plan for all Indian batsmen.Raina lost his wicket while pulling the ball, leaving India in further doldrums.Finally, the "tired" Dhoni walked in.The Kiwis were exceptional with their ground fielding as suggested by the efforts of Guptill and Southee.Taylor missed a trick by having deep fielders for Dhoni as he should have tried to stop India from gathering the easy singles.Dhoni and Sehwag carried on the repair work as they looked to steady the wobbling Indian ship.After a few plays and misses off Mc cullum, Sehwag launched into him.He paced his innings very well, aiming for one boundary per over.In no time, he reached to a fine 100 with the team score at 162!He decided to take on the NZ bowling now and after a couple of fime strokes, lost his wicket to the relief of the Indian camp and dismay of the NZ camp as the "legendary all - rounder" Jadeja walked in.The "cricketer" produced a never before seen shot in just the second delivery he faced, playing an describable and inexplicable shot towards cover point while having his back towards the bowler and fetching himself a boundary to remember!Dhoni left the all rounder stranded when Mc cullum removed him.Though he was beaten a couple of times in his innings, Dhoni did well to stabilize the innings and one just wondered why he did not come ahead of Raina.And then completely treachery took place. Southee bowled a great bouncer, surely not in his capacity resulting in the downfall of the great legend!! No more jokes and sarcasm guys! Southee did bowl a fine bouncer to remove Jadeja.The tailenders stretched the score to 221 before Mills got the final wicket of Patel in the 47th over.

India started in a similar fashion to Kiwis, picking up the early wicket of Guptill.Nehra provided another breakthrough in the form of Wattling and Taylor followed him back quickly in the next over! Yes, this all happened in the space of 5 overs to give India the belief that they could win this match.NZ tried to protect Williamson as he was pushed way down the order after a "duckling" start to his international career.Except for the discipline in their line and lengths, Indian opening bowlers did well to generate some swing in helpful conditions.Dhoni perhaps was a little hasty in introducing Patel into the attack in place of Nehra.Perhaps, he was too excited at the luxury of having four medium pacers in his side!India gained total control of the patch as Kumar got his third wicket in the form of Styris.India were certainly on top with both, Taylor and Styris back in the pavilion and it was a chance for the young Williamson to showcase his talent.Incredibly,Dhoni reintroduced Nehra into the attack after just one over from Munaf as Kumar continued from the other end.A foolish tactic he is fast learning from Sangakkara, Dhoni removed Kumar from the attack who had every right to continue for a couple of overs and handed Munaf the bowl!Ishant Sharma made further inroads into the NZ batting when he removed Williamson with a fine incoming delivery.NZ innings was in shambles once Hopkins too lost his wicket to provide the less than ordinary Munaf his first.
Sharma and Patel strayed regularly in their line though the NZ players,sans Vettori were hardly in a position to capitalize!
A hilarious jig followed as NZ batsmen took a single and Praveen Kumar forgot that Watling was running for Mc cullum and excitedly ran to the stumps thinking of a possible run out!!

Nz lost their seventh wicket as Elliot was found plumb in front of the wickets.Soon, Mc cullum followed as the match looked headed for a early,infact too early a finish.The lack of fight or perhaps,the lack of adjustment the NZ batsmen displayed was certainly disappointing given the target they were set was not a challenging one.Why Dhoni introduced Jadeja into the attack and that too in the powerplay is completely baffling!With Praveen and Nehra having quite a few overs up their sleeve, Dhoni should have gone for the kill.
It was an extremely poor move, one which might pay in bigger matches against more solid oppositions.Sharma was thrashed by Mills, a just treatment to his inconsistency as his bowling was just like a see-saw!Mills played a thrilling and incaptivating innings as he took on the attack to the Indians, sending Kumar and Sharma to all parts of the ground (Sorry, i dont consider Jadeja a bowler and hence, wont mention him!).Dhoni was hit while keeping to Nehra on his injured right hand and was visibly in pain.His stupidity to continue keeping in such circumstances is fast degrading him from the levels of captaincy many have come to respect.Mills made a joyous and entertaining fifty before the NZ innings folded at 118, handing India a 105 run victory and a place in the finals of the tri-series.On a day where the most expansive Indian bowler had an economy of 4.50 and every bowler delivered atleast one maiden, Jadeja had an economy of 7.00 off his three overs without a maiden.

Though India find themselves in the finals, the batting effort remains to be a big concern.Sehwag and extras contributed to more than 50% of the Indian total!After winning the toss and batting first, Indian batsmen were certainly expected to do a lot more.The likes of Saurabh Tiwary have done enough to atleast deserve a chance and so has Pujara to atleast make it to the squad.The Indian bowlers did well though it still remains to be seen how India perform with a quartet of these medium pacers while bowling first in such conditions.A yet another Ind-Sri final awaits us and Dhoni would do well to miss the game and take a rest providing Tiwary a look in.
